Showtime reduced City on a Hill creator Chuck MacLean's role for Season 2 following a misconduct inquiry

MacLean's role on the Boston-set period crime drama was scaled back "after last year becoming the subject of an internal investigation over alleged misconduct," reports Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "Following the inquiry, which corroborated one of the claims concerning inappropriate comments, MacLean remained on the series as a writer only for Season 2. He currently has no deal with Showtime, and his future on the show is unclear if it is renewed for a third season." Andreeva reports that after Season 1 wrapped, an anonymous complaint against MacLean was filed with multiple allegations that triggered an HR investigation. According to the results of the investigation, “the complaint was thoroughly investigated by the Company” and “we were able to corroborate that inappropriate comments were made in violation of CBS policy.” Andreeva reports MacLean underwent sensitivity training, but he could no longer remain working on post-production while staying on as a writer on Season 2. Since MacLean had a two-year deal, his work on City on a Hill under his existing contract is over. In a statement to Deadline, MacLean said: “I cooperated fully with CBS’s investigation and I was pleased when it found that the overwhelming majority of this individual’s claims were unfounded and that I was cleared to continue working on the show. I have always believed in treating all people equally and with respect, and I continue to do so.”
