The Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found in a newly released study that after the Netflix teen drama was released on March 31, 2017, the month of April 2017 contained the highest overall suicide rate for boys ages 10 to 17 of any month of the past five years, reports The New York Times, which adds: "Suicide rates for girls aged 10 to 17 — the demographic expected to identify most strongly with the show’s protagonist — did not increase significantly." Netflix released a statement in response, saying: “We’ve just seen this study and are looking into the research, which conflicts with last week’s study from the University of Pennsylvania (focusing on young adults. This is a critically important topic and we have worked hard to ensure that we handle this sensitive issue responsibly.”
