The HBO drama spent weeks researching this week's episode set in the Staten Island of 1978, and was fully prepared with binges of garbage, detachable graffiti and vintage signs to tack onto newer storefronts. “The big thing for us was that Coney Island was much dirtier back in 1978,” says production designer Scott Dougan. “It’s winter; it’s deserted, plus the aging. We have two weapons at our arsenal: trash and post-production design.”
