John Green's YA novel is set in 2005, during the middle of The O.C.'s run. So The O.C. creator and Looking for Alaska executive producer Josh Schwartz decided to use his Fox drama's old playlists. “We worked really hard to make sure pretty much all the music that’s in the show is from that year,” Schwartz said at the TV press tour. “It was pretty fun — I got to pull out some of my O.C. playlists that I had back in the day, music that never made it onto the show. It was like revisiting moments.” Schwartz and fellow executive producer Stephanie Savage even got some contemporary artists to reimagine those O.C.-era songs.
