The Office line producer Randy Cordray explained to Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey on their Office Ladies podcast that there are two kinds of music rights. "There are sync rights, which is where you're going to play a song by the original artist and that's all. You're just going to hear their song," she said, according to Mashable. "But then there are master rights, and that's what you need if a character is going to sing or hum song." For the 2009 "Cafe Disco" episode, The Office had to spend $40,000 for Michael to lip sync to the song "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" by C&C Music Factory.
