The Idol, which is in development at HBO, will focus on a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult. It's unclear if The Weeknd will play the club owner. The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is co-creating The Idol with his producing partner, former nightlife entrepreneur-turned-writer Reza Fahim, and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Succession and Preacher vet Mary Laws will serve as writer on the series. In previous acting roles, The Weeknd has played himself. Last year, he co-wrote an episode of American Dad! in which he voiced an animated version of himself.
