Film critic William Bibbiani used nearly 30 tweets to explain why the 2000 sketch inspired by Blue Öyster Cult's "The Reaper" is actually funny after Bloomberg opinion writer Noah Smith tweeted that "there actually is no joke. It's not funny at all, and 'more cowbell' has zero meaning or significance. In other words, the 'more cowbell' skit is a demonstration that gaslighting has benign uses. Simply insisting over and over that the skit contains an actual joke, until people question their sense of reality, is funny!" Bibbiani responded: "I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I would have to explain the @nbcsnl 'Cowbell' sketch to another human being, but okay, here we go....First: Yes, there's a joke, and no, it's not watching other people pretend they get it. They actually get it. You're the one who's lost."
