Starz's Vida and Pop TV's One Day at a Time were considered big steps for Latinos in the Prestige TV arena, but both are now canceled. “It’s great Vida existed, but Vida is now gone,” says Vida creator Tanya Saracho. “One Day at a Time is gone now, too. We haven’t arrived.” The cancelation of Vida and One Day at a Time (for the second time) comes in a year that saw the only Latino network TV show with a primarily Latino cast, The Baker and the Beauty, was also canceled. A Writers Guild of America West study found that only 8.7% of TV writers are of Latino descent despite Hispanic-Latinos accounting for 18.3% of the population. The grim stats, coupled with personal experiences, prompted Saracho, One Day at a Time's Gloria Calderón Kellett and the 16 other Latina showrunners who make up the Untitled Latinx Project group to start promoting their own cause.
