In an interview promoting her Wanda Sykes: Not Normal Netflix special, Sykes recalled the events that led her to quit the Roseanne revival shortly before it was canceled. It was Sykes who brought Barr aboard Last Comic Standing as a judge a few years before the revival. So when Barr offered a writing role, Sykes wanted to return the favor. But Sykes recalled that during the Last Comic Standing stint, Barr was tweeting and retweeting "a lot of stuff that sounds nuts." After the Valerie Jarrett tweet, Sykes recalled saying, "'I’ve got to get ahead of this. I can’t just be silent.' That’s why I said I wouldn’t be going back." Asked if she thinks Barr is racist, Sykes said: "I think she has some issues. She’s said that she had some mental issues. But I don’t know. Here’s the thing. You could be a good person and a racist and not even know it."
