Leight originally joined SVU in Season 13 in the wake of Christopher Meloni's exit and successfully restructured the series to focus on Mariska Hargitay's Oliva Benson. In 2019, he returned and has led SVU through the pandemic and its record-breaking 21st season. "The final day of shooting is always bittersweet," Leight began a series of tweets Tuesday night. "Today was a little more than that. As some of you have already figured out, I am stepping down at the end of #SVU23. The last two years of show running during a pandemic have been arduous, and I’ve decided to take a break."
