Composer West Dylan Thordson grew up watching Unsolved Mysteries. So scoring the Netflix reboot's theme and episode music was "kind of a full circle thing" for Thordson, who worked on HBO's The Jinx as well as M. Night Shyamalan's Split and Glass. Thordson did not, however, consult with original theme song composers Gary Malkin or Michael Boyd. "I framed it off with that piano arpeggio ― that sort of Halloween-esque vibe," he said of his version of the theme song. "And then I tried playing it very human-like, I guess, to make it feel more like a breath. The thing about that howling descent, it feels like a human breath, almost like an exasperation. With the current climate of everything, even previous to 2020, the world felt so congested, so I wanted to have this human breath (to represent that)."
