Played by Felicity Huffman on the Netflix limited series, Fairstein led the Manhattan district attorney's sex crimes unit that pushed for the prosecution of the five youths in the 1989 Central Park jogger case. TMZ reports that staffers at the New York City nonprofit Safe Horizon, which aids victims of abuse and violent crime, are incensed that Fairstein is a board member, especially since the nonprofit mostly services minorities. The scrutiny over her involvement started 10 days before When They See Us premiered, when staffers learned of Fairstein's involvement. "We're told Safe Horizon staffers accused Fairstein of racism and demanded her immediate dismissal, but the CEO asked for time to evaluate," reports TMZ. "Our sources say a majority of Safe Horizon's directors are fed up, and plan to take legal action this week to get Fairstein 86'd if the CEO won't do it."
