When the video of the concert started spreading, netizens were quick to respond. One citing concern for safety had this to say:
"I don’t know... maybe the pop girlies should hold off on flying over the audience at concerts for the time being, just for everyone’s safety. Glad everyone was okay."
Netizens continued to highlight the risks involved in aerial acts, criticizing the use of such props.
"I’m sorry that’s actually so scary, when will artists learn to not use these types of props," one commented.
"Omg this is so terrifying...the safety of the artist comes first. These props are not at all required," another chimed in.
"seriously what’s with the obsession of artists with wired/cabled production during their tours?? literally so scary and risky especially if the tour is moving," a user noted.
Others commended Katy Perry's professionalism but noted that singers shouldn't have to risk their lives to deliver great shows.
"Elite professionalism by her, she didn't even panicked despite almost falling," one praised.
"I feel bad that performers feel like they basically have to risk their lives for their show to be “great,”" another pointed out.
"im glad it wasn’t worse," a fan wrote.
Katy Perry embarked on the Lifetimes Tour in support of her seventh studio album, 143 (2024). It kicked off at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City in April and will run through December, concluding at Abu Dhabi's Etihad Park. It is worth noting that this is Perry's first tour in seven years after 2017's Witness: The Tour.
Perry dropped her dance party project, 143, last September. The title represents the phrase "I love you" (number of letters in each word). It featured songs like Woman's World, Lifetimes, and I'm His, He's Mine. While the project debuted at No. 6 on Billboard 200, it was her lowest-charting album.
Despite the divided opening, the Lifetimes Tour started with sold-out performances. The almost 2-hour show, reports New York Theatre Guide, is composed of 5 acts, which are Artificial, Woman's World, Nirvana, Mainframe, and Endgame. The show has performances of Katy Perry's chart-topping songs such as Dark Horse, E.T., Hot n Cold, and Artificial. Renditions of Lifetimes and Firework are performed during the encore.
According to the outlet, Katy Perry has used sci-fi-like imagery all throughout the tour shows. This encompassed aerial performances, cyberpunk-style spherical rooms, a battle with lightsabers, and neon screens.
Perry will travel to Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena next (Monday). She has not publicly responded to the incident.
