594 Men Sign Letter Supporting Demands for Abortion Safety Protocols From Netflix, Disney

Last week, over 400 TV creators and showrunners — all women — signed a letter to top-level executives at Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC Universal, Apple, and other companies demanding specific protocols to protect pregnant employees in states where abortion is banned. Today a new letter of support has been signed by 594 men and sent to the same companies.

Signees include J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Donald Glover, Greg Berlanti, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi, and Ryan Murphy.

The new letter is shorter than last week's, simply reading, "We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with our female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a coordinated and timely response from our employers regarding the imminent workplace-safety crisis created by the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Abortion access doesn't only affect people who can become pregnant. It affects us all."

The movement comes in the wake of the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade on June 24. In the original letter, showrunners called for companies to send a written response by 11:59 PM on August 10.

Showrunners and writers want systems in place to ensure safe, funded, and private travel for an employee seeking an abortion; protocols for ectopic pregnancies and other complications; safeguards "regarding criminal and civil legal protection" to anyone who helps an employee get an abortion; and the discontinuation of political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees.
