Liverpool forward Diogo Jota passed away following a car accident in a Spanish province on July 3, 2025, at the age of 28. His brother, Andre Silva, was also killed in the tragic Lamborghini crash at 26.
In a conversation with the BBC, Spain's Civil Guard revealed that the brothers took their last breath at around 00:30 local time. According to a Marca report, the brothers met with the accident in the Spanish province of Zamora at kilometer 65 of the A-52.
The heartbreaking news comes less than two weeks after he tied the knot with his longtime beau, Rute Cardoso. The Portuguese footballer's untimely demise left his loved ones and fans worldwide grief-stricken.
Diogo has been an integral player for both Liverpool and the Portugal football team. He remained a crucial contributor to the football club's 2024 Premier League victory and his national team's win in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League.
According to a Goal report, Diogo and Andre's car got involved in the accident after exiting a road in the Cernadilla area. Andre was also a professional footballer and played for Portugal's second-tier league.
As the car veered off the motorway in the Zamora province in Spain's north-west direction, a tyre burst while overtaking, causing the vehicle to ignite. Reportedly, they attempted to move forward another vehicle, and it led to the fiery crash.
Onlookers shared shocking details about the accident with the reporters. As Goal confirmed, many people witnessed the footballers' vehicle erupting in flames.
BBC cited a statement released by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). It reads,
"The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated."
It further notes,
"Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself."
Acknowledging both Diogo Jota and Andre Silva's contribution to the sport and the national team, the statement also mentions,
"We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily."
Following the disheartening loss of two young athletes, the Portuguese Football Federation has urged the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to observe a one-minute silence prior to the upcoming Women’s Euros clash between Portugal and Spain scheduled on Thursday.
The outlet also reported a club statement, expressing,
"It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Rest in peace."
On June 22, 2025, the duo exchanged vows and celebrated their wedding nuptials in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their family and friends.
Just 20 hours ago, the athlete shared special moments of his wedding gala on Instagram with a heartwarming caption,
"A day we will never forget 🤍"
According to a British Headline report, Diogo met Rute while attending the same school in Portugal. They have known each other for over a decade and began their relationship during their teenage years. After almost a decade of loving each other, they got engaged in July 2022, celebrating a significant milestone in their relationship.
Jota and Cardoso welcomed three kids. Their first child, Dinis, was born in February 2021, followed by the birth of their second baby in March 2023 and the third in November 2024.
Over the years, the couple has maintained a private relationship and kept their personal lives under wraps.
