There'll Be No More Innings for A League of Their Own

Amazon has officially pulled the plug on A League of Their Own. Earlier this year, the streamer renewed the series for an abbreviated second season, a move that was already protested by fans of the show. Now it’s canceled the series entirely, and production will not be moving forward.

The series, which premiered in August 2022, was a reboot and expansion of the hit 1992 film, pulling from history to tell more accurate stories about the women who played baseball during World War II. It was a project years in the making, first conceived by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham in 2017 — the pair got Penny Marshall’s blessing to create the show before her death in 2018.

According to Variety, studios are blaming the strikes, saying that because of the dual labor actions the series may not have aired until 2025. An easy fix, of course, would be for the studios to agree to fair contracts for the actors and writers who created the series. Instead, the series will be a casualty of the AMPTP’s inaction in negotiating with the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA. Meanwhile, plans for Amazon originals Citadel and The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, two of the most expensive series ever made, are still in motion for now.

A League of Their Own’s cancellation is an especially difficult blow in a year that's already seen the cancellation of several other shows centering queer characters — according to the GLAAD Where We Are on TV report, the 2022-2023 season saw 29% decrease of queer characters on television due to series cancellations. The series was praised for its representation of a variety of queer people and called “the gayest show ever” by fans.

Season 1 ended with a cliffhanger between the series’s core couple, Carson (Jacobson) and Greta (D’Arcy Carden), and the stars and creators teased that there was much more story to tell in future seasons. Unfortunately, for now, the story ends here.
