Trailer of the Week: First Look at Donald Glover's Mr. & Mrs. Smith

As of this week both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are on strike, meaning there will soon be a slowdown of new shows hitting the streamers and networks. But that stoppage hasn’t come quite yet, as this slew of new trailers amply demonstrates.

To celebrate its made-up, capitalism-forward holiday “Prime Day,” Amazon released a sizzle reel of its upcoming original programming. Some of it was simply more of the same — new seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty, Reacher, and The Wheel of Time are just around the corner. But in eight very important seconds, it also shows the first glimpse of Donald Glover’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith series.

This project was first announced in 2021 that Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge would both executive produce and star in the show, then slated to come out in 2022. But later that same year, Waller-Bridge left the production due to “creative differences,” leaving the fate of the series up in the air. Maya Erskine was tapped to take her place starring opposite Glover, which is lucky for us, because from just those eight seconds on our screens, it’s clear that the Pen15 star is the action hero we need.

The action-comedy has an impressive cast supporting the leads, including Parker Posey, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Paul Dano, and Wagner Moura. Hiro Murai, who previously collaborated with Glover on Atlanta and Guava Island, directed the first two episodes of the series.

Honorable mention: Ahsoka, August 23 (Disney+)

This trailer proves that Ahsoka isn’t just another Star Wars show in Disney’s ever-expanding franchise. No, this one is filled with badass women all investigating and fighting a new threat to the galaxy after the Empire’s defeat, a refreshing change of pace in a universe that skews heavily male. The series takes place in the same timeline as The Mandalorian, on which Rosario Dawson first appeared as Ahsoka, and also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ivanna Sakhno, the late Ray Stevenson, and David Tennant.

Honorable mention: Painkiller, August 10 (Netflix)

If this story looks familiar, that’s because it is. The series from Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster follows the rise of the Sackler family and the drug OxyContin, which was also the focus of Hulu’s Dopesick in 2021. This time Matthew Broderick steps into the role of the villainous Richard Sackler, with Uzo Aduba starring as the investigator intent on bringing him down. While the story is similar, the series’s trailer points to a different approach and tone — not once in Dopesick was Michael Stuhlbarg’s Sackler shown dancing in silk pajamas.

Honorable mention: The Super Models, September 20 (Apple TV+)

This teaser is short, sweet, and to the point. “I’m excited to reunite with my friends to both celebrate and examine the way supermodels transcended the traditional perceptions and limits of modeling in the fashion industry through time,” Cindy Crawford wrote on Instagram when the series was first announced in 2020, posting a picture of herself alongside her co-stars Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Linda Evangelista.
