We’ll spare you the Thin Lizzy jokes — you likely already know The Boys are back in town as of June 13 for a fourth season of superpowered satire. But it looks like they’re going to be sticking around past the summer, as Amazon has just announced a Season 5 renewal for Eric Kripke’s adaptation of the eponymous comic-book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
The news comes as part of Prime Video’s (and Amazon’s) first-ever upfront presentation, which kicked off with the news of Noir, a live-action Spider-Man series starring Nicolas Cage, and the streaming platform’s very own Jeopardy! show, Pop Culture Jeopardy!, which is produced by Sony Pictures Television.
“The Boys could be the best job I'll ever have,” Kripke said of the announcement, just a month before the arrival of Season 4. “What other show allows me to write about politics, capitalism, family, and exploding genitalia, though not in that order.” Kripke went on to say that the “cast and crew are deeply grateful” to Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, but joked that the “only problem is that since this year promises to be free of any conflict or misinformation, we're not sure what to write about” for Season 5, which has no release or production start date at this time.
It’s too soon to envision what Season 5 could look like, but in the meantime, we’re wondering what kind of toxic teachings Homelander (Antony Starr) has passed on to his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) in the time since we saw the supe kill a civilian in broad daylight. That was a reference to a certain ex-president (we can only hope he stays that way), but a lot has happened since Season 3 ended in July 2022, so there’s no telling what other real-world parallels The Boys will not-so-subtly draw. Meanwhile, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), with only months to live, struggles to find a way to keep the team together as Victoria Neuman (Claudia Domit) has only expanded her power on the way to the White House. How might exploding genitalia factor into these storylines? That remains to be seen.
The Boys Season 4 premieres June 13 on Prime Video with three episodes, followed by one per week until the finale on July 18. Join the discussion about the show in our forums.
