Nickelodeon and Paramount Animation are developing two new animated Avatar: The Last Airbender films, Paramount Global announced on Wednesday. The news comes after the February 2021 announcement of another animated Avatar film, which is being developed by recently-formed content division Avatar Studios.
Lauren Montgomery, the storyboard artist on Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series The Legend of Korra, will direct the first film in the series. Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, the original creators of Avatar, are on board to executive produce the animated trilogy.
"As original creators Mike and Bryan expand the Avatar universe with us, we're keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties." Ramsey Naito, President of Animation and Development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, said in a statement.
Beyond the animated film trilogy, Netflix is currently developing a live-action Avatar series that will reimagine The Last Airbender with a "culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast."
Avatar: The Last Airbender is currently streaming on Netflix.
