The quirky crime-solver series just welcomed a new member to its ranks. Apple TV+ just shared a first look at Bad Monkey, a new comedy from Bill Lawrence that stars Vince Vaughn as a suspended Miami detective desperate to make his way back on to the force. The series is based on Carl Hiaasen's cult novel of the same name, and is set to premiere August 24.

While slumming it as a health inspector in the Florida Keys, Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) stumbles upon his ticket back to the Miami PD after a human arm is found by tourists out fishing. In order to solve the murder (which the case will almost certainly turn out to be, because how else would an arm end up out at sea?), Yancy will have to deal with "a trove of Floridian oddballs and one bad monkey."

It's basically Monk meets Dexter, with the usual Lawrence/Doozer comedic touches, though Vaughn looks an awful lot like his True Detective Season 2 character in the promotional image. Of course, Yancy is supposed to be closer to being on the right side of the law here than Frank Semyon. The 10-episode series will see the troubled detective aided and hindered by the likes of L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, fellow True Detective alum Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet, and Jodie Turner-Smith. John Ortiz and Zach Braff will also guest star (the former as a "special" designation), and Lawrence's daughter Charlotte will make her TV debut in the series.

Bad Monkey is the latest series that proves the quirky detective remains very much in vogue; Poker FaceWill TrentOnly Murders in the Building, and Elsbeth have all made a splash in recent years. Vaughn is a comedy veteran, so he should be able to put his own spin on the type. And Lawrence can definitely mine the Florida setting for laughs; he's done it successfully once before
