For All Mankind Takes Another Giant Leap in the Trailer of the Week

With an annular eclipse just hours away, the first full look at For All Mankind Season 4 couldn’t have come at a better time. The new trailer lays out the stakes for this exciting new chapter in Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi, and Matt Wolpert’s sci-fi epic, which include people fighting over natural resources — what else is new — and Toby Kebbell figuring out life on Mars.

This week’s best trailers come from all the corners of the streaming universe; along with Apple TV+’s period piece, we’ve got a preview for Taylor Sheridan’s latest series for Paramount+, a trip back in time to The Gilded Age, an early look at Krysten Ritter’s new show, and a Godzilla sighting.

Best trailer for the week of October 9: For All Mankind Season 4, premieres November 10 on Apple TV+

Season 4 of For All Mankind leaps ahead to 2003, with the Happy Valley colony thriving on Mars and NASA expanding its astronaut pool to include regular guys like Miles (Toby Kebbell), a former offshore oil rig worker who dreams of something more. Miles’ ambition will take him a million miles from his home, and straight into the middle of a conflict over a huge (and very valuable, based on the fight that’s about to break out) chunk of iridium that’s just floating in space like something out of a Superman movie.

Along with new additions like Miles, we’ll learn what’s transpired over the last eight years in the lives of our favorites like Dani Poole (Krys Marshall), Aleida Rosales (Coral Peńa), Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt), and Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman, who must have some feelings about this latest batch of old-age makeup). Season 4 is on a weekly schedule once more, so we can look forward to getting a regular dose of FAM’s clear-eyed optimism.

Honorable Mention: The Gilded Age, premieres October 29 on HBO

This extended trailer for the second season of Julian Fellowes’ HBO drama is the usual feast for the eyes, but tensions are already running high in The Gilded Age. Love is in the air for Ada (Cynthia Nixon) with the arrival of Rev. Matthew Forte (Robert Sean Leonard, we missed you), much to Agnes’ (Christine Baranski) chagrin; the elder Van Rhijn sister would rather see their niece Marian (Louisa Jacobson) married off. (You can probably guess how Marian feels about that.)

In Season 2, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) throws down the gauntlet once again, inviting Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) into another “friendly” competition — this time, to give New York City the opera house it deserves. Against the backdrop of this high society in-fighting, The Gilded Age will also dive deeper into the life of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), who, after leaving Agnes’ employ, heads south to lift up Black workers.

Honorable Mention: Lawman: Bass Reeves, premieres November 5 on Paramount+

Bass Reeves was the first Black deputy U.S. marshal; he’s also considered the prototype for the gunslingers and superheroes that have dominated pop culture, from the Lone Ranger to HBO’s Watchmen. Taylor Sheridan and David Oyelowo, who leads a cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Lauren E. Banks, Forrest Goodluck, and Donald Sutherland, will unpack the man and the myth in this Paramount+ series.

Honorable mention: Orphan Black: Echoes, coming to AMC, AMC+, and BBC America in 2024

It’s time to get the Clone Club back together: AMC shared the first trailer for Orphan Black: Echoes, a new sci-fi thriller set in the world created by Graeme Manson and John Fawcett, and it looks just as intriguing as the original series starring Tatiana Maslany. Krysten Ritter leads the show as Lucy, “a woman with an unimaginable origin story” — hmm, where have we seen that before? — who finds that she can’t leave the past behind her. The cast includes Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, Line of Duty), Amanda Fix (North of Normal, High School), Avan Jogia (Now Apocalypse, Zombieland: Double Tap), and Rya Kihlstedt (A Teacher, One Mississippi).

Anna Fishko, of The Society and Fear the Walking Dead, serves as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer along with John Fawcett.

Honorable mention: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, premieres November 17 on Apple TV+

Because it wouldn’t be Friday the 13th without some monsters, Apple TV+ unveiled the official trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters today at New York Comic-Con. Godzilla was looking bigger and better than ever when we last saw him, and now it seems the kaiju’s help is needed in a world that’s only started to realize there are beings that predate human civilization.

Monarch will explore the eponymous global organization in greater depth as two siblings (played by Anna Sawai and Ren Watabe) come to terms with their family’s connection to the shadowy group. And, as foretold by the fates — that is, the strong family resemblance, right down to the voice — Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell portray the same character, Army office Lee Shaw, roughly 70 years apart.
