Better Call Saul Creators Have 'No Plans' to Continue Breaking Bad Universe

Next week's Better Call Saul finale is set to be the end of the Breaking Bad universe.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, Better Call Saul co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould put a pretty definitive end to the crime, drug, and drama-filled world that saw Bob Odenkirk's Jimmy McGill turn into Saul Goodman, the eventual lawyer for Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

According to Gilligan, the creative team doesn't want to push their luck.

"Vegas metaphors are probably a mistake, but you just can't keep putting all your money on red 21 over and over again," he said. "We probably pushed it doing a spinoff of Breaking Bad. I could not be more happy with the results, and then I did El Camino, and I'm very proud of that, but... you better know when to leave the party."

"So I don't have any plans right now to do anything more in this universe," Gilligan continued. "I know I was asked at the end of Breaking Bad and I gave the same answer — I gotta prove to myself that I'm not a one-trick pony."

"I love working with these people," he added. "I want to keep the band together no matter what, but with a different universe."

Gould agreed, pointing out that continuing the Breaking Bad universe would require "a big investment to ask from the audience," adding that he's ready to try other things.

"Having said that," Gould said, "I love Albuquerque. I love Bob [Odenkirk]. I love Rhea [Seehorn]. I love Vince [Gilligan]. So we'll keep as much of the band together, and also, never say never. Who knows how we're going to feel in a couple of years?"

The series finale of Better Call Saul airs Monday, August 15 at 9:00 PM ET on AMC. Seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix.
