Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres revealed recently that her move to the United Kingdom from the US is permanent. DeGeneres, who initially moved across the Atlantic Ocean along with wife Portia de Rossi to live there on a part-time basis, opened up about changing her mind in wake of Donald Trump’s second term in office.
During an appearance at the Everyman theatre in Cheltenham near her now-home on July 20, the comedian spoke to presenter Richard Bacon about her decision to permanently live in the UK, according to BBC.
DeGeneres confirmed to Bacon that her move was motivated by Trump winning the 2024 election, noted the news outlet. About her and de Rossi’s initial plans, she added,
“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in’, and we're like, 'We're staying here’.”
DeGeneres, who has moved to the historic Cotswolds, an area across Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, shared that she made the move in November and witnessed snow for the first time. She added:
“We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
The comedian also opened up about what she likes in her new home, and as per BBC, said,
“It's absolutely beautiful. We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture - everything you see is charming and it's just a simpler way of life. It's clean. Everything here is just better - the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”
Ever since her move to the UK, Ellen DeGeneres has been posting updates about rural British life on her social media page.
Taking to Instagram, the comedian posted a series of videos of hilarious episodes with the sheep at her new home.
DeGeneres posted a video of herself feeding her sheep and while joking that she would use them to maintain her grass, wrote,
“Turns out my lawn mowing skills are not great. So…..sheep”
A few days later, DeGeneres shared that her sheep keep escaping, posting a montage of clips that showed the sheep coming into the comedian’s home while she tried to shoo them away. In a hilarious message, wrote,
“We got sheep to maintain the grass, but they keep escaping. I’m not sure if this is easier than using the lawnmower.”
DeGeneres continued the amusing series, and posted videos of herself and her wife, Portia maintaining the exteriors of their home, and wrote,
“Sheep are supposed to eat the grass so you don’t have to mow. Our sheep didn’t get the memo.”
In a video titled, “Sheep Escape Part 2,” DeGeneres counted the saga with her sheep in her rural England home.
In the background of her sheep trying to enter her home, DeGeneres could be heard talking to her animals as she said,
“‘You guys, this is a little too close. Why are you here?’ Well they escaped the electric fence, that didn’t work.”
Ultimately, DeGeneres and her wife sold the sheep, noted BBC.
