The 75th Emmy Award nominations come at an interesting time in the industry. Yvette Nicole Brown (Community, Big Shot) and Television Academy Chairman Frank Scherma announced the nominees today via a livestream, just one day after the 10-week mark of the WGA strike and one day before a potential SAG-AFTRA strike. There’s a slight cloud over the annual celebration of the best television and performances of the year as those who create remain engaged in a tumultuous fight against the AMPTP. But none of that is stopping the Television Academy from doling out honors.
The show will go on, it’s just a matter of when. According to Variety, Fox and the Television Academy are preparing to delay the ceremony as industry strikes potentially continue — Fox is pushing for a January air date while the Television Academy is fighting for November. Both parties are waiting to see if SAG-AFTRA joins WGA on strike before officially making a decision, though the details around when and where the 2023 Emmys will be held are expected to be finalized by the end of July.
There are other changes to the way the organization is doing things this year. The White Lotus, which previously swept the Outstanding Limited/Anthology Series, is competing in the Drama categories against Andor, Better Call Saul, The Crown, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Succession, and Yellowjackets. Last Week with John Oliver, which has dominated the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category for the past seven years, is competing against Saturday Night Live because of some category shake-ups — instead of Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, the categories will now be Outstanding Talk Series and Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, allowing a new champion to emerge in the former.
