Game of Thrones Fans Can Become Fluent in High Valyrian on Duolingo

Game of Thrones fans can soon become fluent in High Valyrian, the fictional language featured in the HBO series, thanks to an updated course on Duolingo.

Ahead of the House of the Dragon premiere, language learning platform Duolingo has partnered with HBO Max to update its existing High Valyrian course. The refreshed curriculum on the app includes over 150 new words and more than 700 new sentences in High Valyrian.

Duolingo worked with linguist David Peterson, who developed the High Valyrian language for Game of Thrones.

"I am thrilled for new and old fans of the Game of Thrones series to experience the High Valyrian language," said Peterson in a statement. "It's been a pleasure to revisit the world of Westeros for House of the Dragon and work with the team at Duolingo to breathe new life into this course."

In addition, through HBO Max's new app "House of Dragon: DracARys," High Valyrian learners can hatch a personalized, virtual dragon egg and raise the dragon at home in augmented reality. However, the dragons only respond to commands in High Valyrian, so to become the "Mother of Dragons," fans must first learn the language.

House of the Dragon premieres August 21 on HBO and will stream on HBO Max.
