House of the Dragon Showrunner: Game of Thrones Prequel Could Become An Anthology

Miguel Sapochnik, the showrunner of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, believes there are more stories to tell about the Targaryens. So much so, he revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that it's possible the prequel could become an anthology series.

The series, which is based on George R.R. Martin's novel "Fire and Blood," offers an extensive history of House Targaryen. When asked if House of the Dragon could be expanded into an anthology series, Sapochnik was enthusiastic about the possibility.

"Absolutely. I think that's one of the interesting things about the Targaryens," he said. "We've chosen a story that's almost like Star Wars: Episode IV. It's the New Hope. We can go backwards. We can go forwards. There's a lot of opportunities there."

His excitement aside, Sapochnik knows it would take HBO's official stamp of approval before something like that could happen. "I hope we've been given the opportunity to set up something," he said.

Neither Sapochnik nor HBO has officially confirmed there will be a second season of House of the Dragon, but during the show's Comic-Con panel, writer Ryan Condal said the writers are in the preparation stage, should the series be renewed.

House of the Dragon premieres August 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
