President Joe Biden will address gun violence and the need for gun reform in a nationally-broadcast speech to the nation Thursday evening. The announcement comes in the wake of multiple mass shootings across the United States, including Buffalo, New York, Uvalde, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The White House said the president will “deliver remarks on the recent tragic mass shootings and the need for Congress to act to pass common sense laws to combat the epidemic of gun violence that is taking lives every day.” No further information about the content of address has been given.
In the past Biden has said he is in favor of reinstating a ban on assault weapons and instituting universal background checks. The speech comes as a small, bipartisan group of senators have been working together to create a package of measures to address the gun violence epidemic.
Biden's address will air on major cable news networks and broadcast networks including ABC, CBS, and NBC. The president will speak at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT from the Cross Hall in the White House.
