With the world in an era of peak TV nostalgia (looking at you, Friends and Fresh Prince reunions), it only makes sense that the reboot concept get the comedy treatment. Enter Reboot, a new show-within-a-show from Modern Family creator Steven Levitan starring Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, Johnny Knoxville, and Paul Reiser.
The trailer sees the dysfunctional cast of an early 2000s family sitcom reunite when a plucky writer (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Rachel Bloom) pitches a reboot of the beloved series to Hulu. The cast has certainly seen better days; Clay Barber (Knoxville) has had some run-ins with the law, Bree Marie Jensen (Greer) spent some time on a low-budget sci-fi series, and Reed Sterling (Key) left it all behind to pursue a (failed) film career.
"Comedy's evolved since you last wrote for television," Bloom tells Paul Reiser's character. "I mean, honestly, whole species have evolved." Despite these roadbumps and some history (romantic, dramatic, and otherwise) between them, the show's original cast and creator (Reiser) agree to return for the reboot. Predictably, shenanigans ensue, and the group must address their long-standing issues as the world continues to change around them.
Reboot premieres September 20 on Hulu.
