Janet Caperna, who stars in Bravo's reality show The Valley, has left the US after facing a barrage of online hate, including death threats and targeted harassment aimed at her and her family. The 35-year-old TV star flew to Switzerland with her husband, Jason, and their 18-month-old son, Cameron. She decided to leave after receiving increasingly alarming messages from viewers on social media.

The Daily Mail reports that Caperna made her Instagram private while heading to Europe after some nasty and graphic messages from online users started going around. Screenshots given to the news outlet show that some people had mentioned where her child was and made direct threats involving her family. Caperna spoke out about the online harassment she faced. She explained that while people expect criticism in reality TV, the messages she got went beyond that into targeted abuse and threats.

Speaking to the outlet, Janet Caperna said,

“I’m sick of threats and slurs being normalized because ‘we signed up for this when we joined reality TV,"'

Caperna admitted she understands her role invites public attention, but she voiced worry over how this kind of behavior toward reality TV stars seems to be becoming normal. She said she is now trying to create stronger limits on her online activity and wants to keep pushing for more thoughtful discussions about reality TV.

She also talked about the bigger picture, wondering if those who act this way online might also be part of her regular life offline. Caperna expressed concerns about how this kind of online environment might shape how people think and act in the real world. Janet Caperna said,

“That’s sick and not normal and I’m not ever going to pretend it’s normal or acceptable to message strangers threats and slurs. It’s sad to me that people go this far, it’s definitely the worst part about this ‘job.' I’m learning how to put boundaries on social media in place and learning as I go. I support healthy dialogue around reality TV and think some of the best conversations about modern culture stem from shows like ours.”

The comments attacked Janet Caperna, used racial slurs, and even threatened her child. Caperna, who used to work as a celebrity assistant for Cameron Diaz, talked more about what happened on her podcast, This Side of the Hill. She hosts the show with Jared Lipscomb.

During the episode, they read aloud a selection of the messages to emphasize their severity. Some included death wishes and personal attacks involving her family and appearance.

The incident also involved someone who used to be a friend and is now a co-star. Janet Caperna pointed out that this person replied to a viewer’s comment about her parenting and behavior by using a laughing emoji. She said she felt let down by the co-star’s decision to react this way in public.

This situation has brought more attention to the ongoing conversation about how public figures manage the line between sharing their lives and staying safe online. Janet Caperna's experience is just one example of how more people in the entertainment world are taking steps to protect themselves and their loved ones from negativity online.
