Pop star Jennifer Lopez is set to come back as the host of American Music Awards after a gap of ten years. Previously, Lopez had been the host of the 2015 awards ceremony. The awards ceremony this year is scheduled to be held on May 26.
On May 13, however, less than two weeks to the grand event, Lopez took to Instagram to share a rather serious news. The pop star posted an Instagram story about a painful injury she suffered while rehearsing for the show.
As per the story Lopez shared on Instagram, she suffered a deep cut on the bridge of her nose. She mentioned that the injury on her nose occurred during while rehearsing for the AMAs.
In another Instagram story following the update about her facial injury, Lopez posted a picture of herself along with her doctor, Dr. Diamond. Alongside the image, she wrote and thanked Dr. Diamond for “stitching her up,” alluding to the fact that the facial injury was deep enough to warrant stitches.
As per the Instagram story, Lopez also explained that the accident had taken place a week ago. Given that the AMAs ceremony is scheduled to be held in less than two weeks’ time, fans are hoping that Lopez recovers from her injury. The On The Floor star is confident about her recovery though, and according to her, she is “good as new.”
Jennifer Lopez has had a long relationship with the American Music Awards. As per People Magazine, Lopez has performed 10 times at the music event. She performed solo for the first time on the awards show back in 2001.
For her debut solo performance, Lopez performed a rendition of her hit single Love Don't Cost a Thing, which was the lead track from her album J.Lo, which released the same year, and went on to top the music charts.
In October 2024, Lopez appeared on the AMAs’ special ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the awards show. In a taped interview for the occasion, Lopez recalled her experience during her debut solo performance. Lopez, as per People Magazine, said,
“It was so long ago — but the energy in the room was very electric.”
Lopez shared her emotional association with the awards show, also reminiscing that during her childhood, she would catch the show on television. As per New York Post, Lopez said,
“It’s pretty incredible, right?…Fifty years of the American Music Awards. I remember watching them at home when I was a little girl.”
An accomplished musician and having won multiple awards at the AMAs over the years, Lopez, in her interview for the 50th anniversary of the awards, spoke highly of the institution, which was started by accomplished producer Dick Clark in 1973. The awards show was envisioned as a fan voted alternative to the Grammys. As per the New York Post, Jennifer Lopez said,
“Music really does have the power to heal and uplift and to connect us. And the AMAs have been showcasing that for half a century now. And I’m excited for the next 50 years of music — and magic.”
At the 2011 American Music Awards, Jennifer Lopez won the Favorite Latin Artist award. As per People Magazine, the award meant a lot for Lopez, who reportedly recalled winning the trophy during the 50th anniversary special. Lopez said,
“Winning a fan-voted award is incredibly special because it's directly from the people that you make the music for. It's just a humbling experience"
As per Variety, on April 9 this year, Dick Clark Productions, the production company which organizes the AMAs, announced that Lopez would be hosting the awards ceremony. In a statement to the media on Lopez’s selection as the host, Jay Penske, the CEO of Dick Clark Productions said,
“Jennifer’s incredible talent and incomparable stage presence make her the ideal host of the show. We know she will bring her one-of-a-kind energy to the official kick-off celebration of summer.”
Fans of Jennifer Lopez have eagerly been waiting for the newest edition of the AMAs ever since the announcement. As per Billboard, solo hosting the prestigious awards ceremony is an honor that has only been bestowed upon upon three musicians other than Lopez.
According to Billboard, the awards ceremony was specially chosen to be held on May 26 every year, which is also celebrated as Memorial Day in the US. As per the media outlet, the organizers intend on paying tribute to US troops and veterans by hosting the event each year on Memorial Day.
