What is, "Eligible for a Primetime Emmy Award?"

Beginning in 2023, game shows including Jeopardy! will shift to the Primetime Emmy Awards after years of competing in the Daytime categories. The move is a result of an agreement between The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to begin categorizing programming awards based on genre rather than the time of day a show airs.

The organizations said in an announcement that shows eligible for the new category, Outstanding Game Show, must have "game elements that primarily take place in studio and involve mental challenges." Eligible shows must also "be self-contained or carryover (winner continues to next episode) and cannot be arced."

In addition to Outstanding Game Show, the Primetime Emmys will also add a category for Outstanding Host For a Game Show. This will be awarded to the "master of ceremony."

The new game show categories will be separate from the existing Outstanding Competition Program award, for which many reality shows with skill-based challenges are eligible. That award will be renamed Outstanding Reality Competition Program.

The changes are set to take effect next year at the 75th Emmy Awards.
