Jeopardy! Is Planning an Alex Trebek Tribute That 'May Well Break the Internet'

It's hard to believe it's been almost two years since we lost Alex Trebek, but the occasion will not go without notice by Jeopardy!, the show he hosted for over 35 years.

In this week's episode of the show's official Inside Jeopardy! podcast, executive producer Michael Davies says the show is planing something "really tremendous" for its November 8th episode, the second anniversary of Trebek's death.

"We owe him a fantastic episode of Jeopardy! on that day," explains Davies. "It may well break the internet. I don’t want to give too much away."

Trebek passed away in 2020 after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. The show paid tribute him last year on the first anniverary of his death with in a title card following the show's closing credits that said, simply: "Alex Trebek, July 22, 1940 - November 8, 2020. You are missed every day." 

Jeopardy! is set to kick off its 39th season in syndication September 12th, with Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings sharing the role of newly-named permanant hosts. Also returning to the Trebek stage for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic is the show's studio audience, a move Jennings says Trebek would have welcomed.

"Nobody would be more pleased about this than Alex himself," Jennings tweeted at the time. "He was a natural showman (as anyone who ever saw a Jeopardy! taping can attest) and was never quite as happy doing the audience-less shows of the pandemic era. We're back, Alex!"

Jeopardy! airs in syndication weeknights. A new weekly edition of Celebrity Jeopardy premieres on ABC Sunday September 25th.
