Our Flag Means Death Promises More Pirate Romance in Season 2 Trailer

Even before Our Flag Means Death was renewed in June 2022, creator David Jenkins confirmed that “the show is the relationship” between Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) — any future seasons, he said, would continue exploring their love story. Now, the trailer is here to prove that the pirates’ romance will be going strong in Season 2, whether the two are physically together or not.

Blackbeard was left heartbroken at the end of Season 1, thinking that Stede had decided to end their relationship for good. But Stede only had momentary cold feet, and in the finale headed back out to the sea to search for his love. The teaser shows Stede trying to get his profession of love to Blackbeard by any means necessary, throwing a message in the bottle into choppy waters (though, as one Twitter user pointed out, it may be all for naught since Blackbeard canonically cannot read).

Meanwhile, Blackbeard seems to be leaning into being a lover scorned, choosing to use his rowdy crew to overtake seafaring weddings. As Stede defends Blackbeard as being “actually a good guy,” Blackbeard curses Stede’s name, returning to his violent, heartless ways.

There are glimpses of new guest stars Minnie Driver and Ruibo Qian decked out in their best pirate garb as well as the return of cast members like Vico Ortiz, Samson Kayo, Con O’Neil, Joel Fry, and Leslie Jones. According to the teaser, there will be plenty of obstacles keeping the central couple apart, including a huge storm and a new batch of pirates, but here’s hoping that Stede’s message in a bottle makes it to someone who can read it to Blackbeard and bring them back together by season’s end.

Honorable mention: Neon October 19 (Netflix)

This comedy from Max Searle (Dave, Chad) and Shea Serrano (Primo) follows a group of three friends in Miami trying to be the next big reggaeton stars. Already the song in the trailer, one of the series’s originals produced by Tainy, promises a dance-worthy soundtrack, and Daddy Yankee himself serves as not only executive producer but pops up in a cameo as himself.

Honorable mention: One Shot: Overtime Elite September 5 (Prime Video)

The path to the NBA is changing, and this six-part docuseries follows hopefuls working their way to the big time on their own terms. The series focuses on the Overtime Elite, a professional league for 16- to 20-year-olds based in Atlanta, and the trailer shows that putting so many young, talented players in one space is bound to lead to personality clashes on and off the court. But it’s expected that emotions will be high — they gave up a traditional adolescence to follow their dreams, and their entire futures are on the line.

Honorable mention: Starstruck September 28 (Max)

Once again there’s romance in the air, but this time it’s not between Jessie (Rose Matafeo) and Tom (Nikesh Patel). Despite ending Season 2 with a dramatic, mutual profession of love, the trailer for Season 3 shows these two apart once again, and both with different partners. Their feelings for each other don’t just magically go away, though, and their struggle to define their relationship continues with the same charm that carried the first two seasons.
