Prime Video’s Dead Ringers: Everything We Know So Far

David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychological thriller Dead Ringers is getting a modern update in a new Prime Video limited series. The original film follows twin gynecologists, each played by Jeremy Irons, who run a practice treating women’s fertility problems. Rachel Weisz is stepping into the dual role for the upcoming series that was created, written, and produced by playwright Alice Birch (Normal People, Succession). Birch and Weisz set out to reimagine the story through the lens of the challenges women still face in healthcare. Here’s what we know so far.

What is Dead Ringers about?

Weisz stars as twins Beverly and Elliot Mantle, OBGYNs who share everything. And the pair’s goal is the same: to address the antiquated practices of women’s healthcare by any means necessary, including leaving medical ethics by the wayside. Weisz, also an executive producer on the project, is a fan of the original movie, so while many details in the series will differ, there will still be some reverence of and adherence to the source material. While maintaining the tone of the original within the psychological thriller genre, we should expect many dark turns and nods to Cronenberg’s signature body horror imagery.

The original film was very loosely based on a bizarre true story about the Marcus brothers, identical twin gynecologists who died in the same place at the same time, seemingly of drug withdrawal, though only one twin showed symptoms. Whether or not the series will draw details from this case is unknown.

When will Dead Ringers premiere?

All six episodes of the limited series will premiere April 21 on Prime Video.

Who is in the cast of Dead Ringers?

Joining Weisz in her dual leading roles is Michael Chernus (Severance, Orange Is the New Black) as Tom, a scientist working with the double Weisz’s on a groundbreaking but dangerous new project; Poppy Liu (Hacks, Better Call Saul) as Greta, the twins’ house manager; Britne Olford (The Umbrella Academy, American Horror Story: Asylum) as Genevieve, an actress and patient who appears to get romantically involved with one of the twins; and Jennifer Ehle (1923) and Emily Meade (The Leftovers) as a wealthy married couple who become involved in the twins’ business.
