See Scott Pilgrim the Way It Was Meant to Be Seen in First Trailer

Back in March, Netflix announced that it would be reuniting most of the cast and crew from Edgar Wright’s 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World for a new series. The biggest difference? The whole thing would be anime. It was already an exciting prospect, taking the pages of Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski’s graphic novel. Seeing the animation in all its glory in the trailer, it’s clear that this is the way the story was always meant to be seen.

Best trailer for the week of August 14: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, November 17 (Netflix)

Once again Michael Cera stars as the titular Scott Pilgrim with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Marc Webber, Mae Whitman and Ellen Wong all reprising their original roles. Their animated counterparts fight, swoon, and sing in comic book-style technicolor.

The animation replicates O’Malley’s cartoons almost exactly, adding to the authenticity of the adaptation — it’s like the pages of the graphic novel come to life. There are familiar snippets from the film, like the first moment Scott laid eyes on Ramona Flowers (Winstead) and his fights with her various evil exes. But there are also glimpses at how much more there is to explore in each scene now that the creators have eight episodes (and who knows, maybe more in future seasons) to tell Scott Pilgrim’s full story.

Honorable mention: The Other Black Girl, September 13 (Hulu)

Hulu brings Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel, about a lone Black woman working at a publishing office discovering the company’s dark secrets, to the screen. Harris cited Ira Levin’s The Stepford Wives and Jordan Peele’s Get Out as inspiration for the thriller, and by the looks of the trailer, co-showrunners Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (both previously producers on Queens and the Will & Grace reboot) are channeling that same horror-comedy influence in the series.

Honorable mention: The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 4, September 5 (Bravo)

Mary Cosby is back. Just as one controversial cast member (the now-imprisoned Jen Shah) leaves, another returns, ensuring that there will be no lull in the drama. This trailer promises a jam-packed season with continuing family feuds, and Mary Cosby slinging insults with a vengeance, and a brand new housewife. We’re already asking ourselves the same thing Seth Marks is: “What the frick’s the rumor with Angie K.?”

Honorable mention: Scouts Honor: The Secret Files of the Boy Scouts of America September 6 (Netflix)

The latest offering in Netflix’s true-crime slate digs deep into the Boy Scouts of America’s deades-long cover-up of sexual abuse cases. According to the trailer, the BSA’s “perversion files” date back to the organization’s inception in 1910 — and in those files is information about 82,000 victims of abuse. Filmmaker Brian Knappenberger (The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez) interviews former scouts, noted whistleblowers, and more to reveal the unsettling details.
