Stranger Things Creators Say Their Pitch for the Final Season Got 'Executives to Cry'

The final season of Stranger Things is set to be an emotional one. 

At an event in Los Angeles this weekend, Stranger Things creators Ross and Matt Duffer revealed that the upcoming final season of the Netflix original is "full steam ahead" - and that it's going to elicit some serious tears. 

"We did get our executives to cry, which I felt was a good sign that these executives were crying," said Matt Duffer, referring to their two-hour pitch for the final season. "The only other times I’ve seen them cry were like budget meetings," he joked. While the Duffer Brothers and executive producer Shawn Levy remained vague about any plot details, they did say the final season is set to be "a culmination of all the seasons". 

Stranger Things 4 Volume 2 broke records as Netflix's most-viewed English-language original series of all time, racking up some 1.4 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days on the platform. 

 "As a witness and having been in that two-hour pitch room and having read this first script - I’m paralyzed with fear that I’ll spoil anything - but I will say the thing about these Duffer Brothers is that even though the show has gotten so famous and the characters have gotten so iconic, and there’s so much about the ’80s and the supernatural and the genre, it’s about these people, it’s about these characters," said Levy. "Season 5 is already so clearly taking care of these stories of the characters because that’s always been the lifeblood of Stranger Things."

The Duffers have already turned in the script for the Season 5 premiere, and are currently hard at work on Episode 2 of the fifth season. "I think that what we’re trying to do is go back to the beginning a little bit in the tone of [Season] 1, but scale-wise it’s more in line with what [Season] Four is," said Ross Duffer. "Hopefully it’s got a little bit of everything."

A release date for Stranger Things 5 has not been announced yet.
