The summer solstice is still a couple weeks away, but awards season is in full bloom — the Television Critics Association just announced the nominees for its 40th annual awards, a milestone for the organization.
If you've been paying attention to the zeitgeist, you won't be surprised by the frontrunners. Baby Reindeer, one of this year's most electrifying (and polarizing) new series tied with Shōgun and Netflix's Ripley for the most nominations with five. The Bear's second season, which earned raves from critics everywhere, earned four nominations, including one for Program of the Year.
The Bear/Shōgun/Baby Reindeer/Ripley supremacy pushed FX and Netflix to the front of the pack with 16 nominations each. But HBO/Max isn't too far behind with 13, including nominations for Outstanding Achievement in News and Information and Program of the Year (for Hacks).
On the performance front, Quinta Brunson and Jean Smart, both previous winners for Individual Achievement in Comedy, will look to pick up another prize in the category next month. Anna Sawai, who gave one of the year's best performances across genres, earned her first nomination for Individual Achievement in Drama alongside her Shōgun co-star Hiroyuki Sanada.
"This was a terrific television season in every genre, and our nominations reflect those riches," said TCA President Jacqueline Cutler. "We're thrilled to celebrate our 40th Awards and even more delighted to do so in person." The winners will be announced in-person at an exclusive ceremony on July 12.
