Paramount Pictures and Avatar Studios are gearing up to bring back a fan-favorite cartoon series with The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, an upcoming animated movie that will carry on the story of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This film, the first full-length feature from Avatar Studios, marks a big step in growing the Avatar world. Lauren Montgomery directs the project, with William Mata as co-director.

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender – What we know so far

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender movie brings back characters fans are familiar with but shows them at a different point in their lives. This time, Aang and his pals will be young grown-ups, living in a world that's still getting over a war and changing as a new generation takes charge. While much about the plot is unknown yet, the movie will explore the problems Aang faces as he keeps up his job as the world's spiritual and political go-between.

A new bad guy, voiced by Dave Bautista, will pose a fresh threat to the peace Aang has worked hard to keep. The movie boasts a talented and varied group of voice actors. Eric Nam lends his voice to the grown-up Aang. The cast also includes Jessica Matten, Dionne Quan, Román Zaragoza, and Steven Yeun.

Bautista’s casting as the main villain adds an element of intrigue, particularly since his character’s identity and motives are still undisclosed. Fans will be pleased to learn that beloved characters like Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko will also return, with Dante Basco reprising his iconic role as Zuko.

In the scope of its story, the film also puts forth an extra layer of import as it is the first project to come out of Avatar Studios, which was founded in 2021 by the original series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Also, producing the film with them are Latifa Ouaou and Maryann Garger, and in the mix we have long-time series producer Eric Coleman in the executive producer seat.

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will hit theaters in the U.S. on October 9, 2026, via Paramount Pictures. Although no footage has been made public thus far, the reveal of the title and cast at CinemaCon 2015 did enough to get the fan base excited. Animation Magazine reported that the second delay in the release date was due to "unspecified setbacks in the physical animation production" process.

Serving as the first installment of a planned trilogy, the film represents not just a return to a cherished world but the beginning of a larger cinematic journey that promises to further explore the legacy and evolution of its central characters.
