Tom Hiddleston Hopes Loki Coming Out as Bisexual Was 'Meaningful' for Fans

Nearly one year after Loki became the MCU's first bisexual hero, Tom Hiddleston has finally opened up about his character's coming out process.

"I also hope Loki coming out as bisexual was meaningful to people who spotted it," Hiddleston said in an interview with the Guardian published Saturday. "It was a small step, and there’s further to go. But it was definitely important to all of us."

In the third episode of the Disney+ series, Loki tells Lady Loki, aka Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), that he has romantic history with both princes and princesses. His sexuality is not mentioned again in the six-episode season.

In an interview with Variety last June, Di Martino said that having Loki come out as bisexual was important for series director Kate Herron. “I think people have been waiting a long time for it. The comic books allude to it and even the Norse mythology, I think," she said. "It’s been around for so long, and it was really important to [Herron] to have that in the show….I’ve got to say how happy it makes me that people are happy to see that.”

After the episode aired, Herron wrote on Twitter, “From the moment I joined ‘Loki’ it was very important to me, and my goal, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual. It is a part of who he is and who I am, too. I know this is a small step but I’m happy, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon.”

That said, some viewers weren't satisfied with Loki's coming out. Variety reported at the time that It's a Sin and Queer as Folk creator Russell T. Davies criticized the coming out scene as too short and insubstantial. Davies might get his wish, as Herron told Collider last July that she hopes to explore Loki's sexuality further down the line, saying, "There’s obviously more road to travel with that aspect of his personality."
