On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump announced he plans to take legal action against CNN and "other media outlets" he claims have defamed him. Trump's attorney, Jim Trusty, alleges media outlets were wrong to suggest Trump's election fraud claims were false.
"I have notified CNN of my intent to file a lawsuit over their repeated defamatory statements against me," Trump said in a statement. "I will also be commencing actions against other media outlets who have defamed me and defrauded the public regarding the overwhelming evidence of fraud throughout the 2020 Election. I will never stop fighting for the truth and for the future of our Country!"
Trump's attorney sent a 282-page letter to CNN CEO Chris Licht demanding the network "immediately take down the false and defamatory publications."
The letter cites multiple examples of alleged defamation, most of which are related to Trump's false claims of election fraud, and states that CNN "consistently fed a narrative that denounced President Trump's legitimacy and competency."
It goes on to state that CNN often referred to Trump's claims about the 2020 presidential election as "lies" and "baseless theories."
"Without regard for President Trump's genuine belief in his statements, CNN has published numerous articles characterizing him as a 'liar' and the purveyor of the 'Big Lie,'" the letter reads.
Recently, Licht urged CNN staffers to stop referring to Trump's false election fraud claims as the "Big Lie," in an effort to adopt a "less partisan tone and strategy."
The letter confirms Trump still believes the 2020 election results were fraudulent, stating, "Lawyers for the President pursued a claim that an elaborate international conspiracy, coupled with a commonly used voting machine, were somehow responsible for President Biden's win."
