Twitch streamer Nick Polom apologizes for his comments on Texas floods

The streamer was accused of being insensitive to the tragedy

    Live streamer and YouTuber Nick Polom, who is also known as Nmplol, is apologizing after facing backlash on his comments on the Texas floods.

    Polom took to X (formerly Twitter) to issue an apology in wake of his comments, which netizens claimed were insensitive considering the immense loss of life due to the Texas floods.

    Apologizing to his fans, Polom wrote,

    “Sorry guys joke went too far. I wasn’t fully aware of the situation. It’s tragic what’s happened. I’ll be more mindful going forward. Hope everyone stays safe and dry in Texas.”

     

     

    What did Nick Polom say about the Texas floods?

    Tragedy struck Texas when the Guadalupe river overflowed its bank after torrential rain gripped Central Texas July 4 onwards, according to Reuters. Despite the rescue of around 850 people, many lost their lives around the Kerr County in Texas Hill Country, as per the news agency.

    Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp also bore the brunt of the casualties where many children were still missing, as per Reuters.

    As of the writing of this article, around 81 people had died as a result of the Texas floods, according to NBC News, with 28 casualties who were children.

    Nick Polom received the news of the Texas floods during a Twitch live stream with fellow live streamer, Esfand on July 5, according to Dexerto.

    In a clip from the live stream shared on X, Polom was told,

    “Like, 13 confirmed people dead and like 12 campers are lost right now from a summer camp nearby.”

    Polom could be heard asking,

    “Is it children?”

    When another person on the stream confirmed to Polom that he was indeed talking about young children, Polom replied,

    “Okay, they don’t have much left for anyways, it’s okay.”

    Responding to Polom, another streamer, Brie contended,

    “They have their whole lives ahead of them.”

    In response, Polom brought up the impact of Artificial Intelligence on children’s futures, and said,

    “What their whole lives Brie?…When they’re older, every job is going to be AI, everything they learn is on ChatGPT, there is no future.”

     

     

    Netizens slammed Nick Polom’s comments on the Texas floods

    Responding to the clip circulating on social media, netizens pointed out to the insensitive nature of Nick Polom’s comments which made light of a terrible tragedy. An X user responded to the comments, and wrote,

    “This is a sick person. I urge all Americans to Block him?”

    Another netizen pointed out the hypocritical nature of such comments, and slammed Polom while writing,

    “Unless it's someone he loves. Smh! All I can say is empathy is a hard thing to learn if you don't have it.”

     

    Another X user commented,

    “Disgusting and heartless. Mocking the deaths of children during a tragedy shows a total lack of humanity. There is nothing funny about families grieving and children missing. This is not “dark humor” it is sick.”

    A netizen focused on the terrible nature of the tragedy in Texas, and wrote,

    “That’s horrible. Haven’t seen life through the wonderful eyes of children. Everything is new and wonderful to them. They deserved to continue developing their curiosity in their lives”

    Netizens had also flooded Polom’s social media pages with comments slamming the streamer’s initial reaction to the Texas floods.
