Walt and Jesse's Better Call Saul Roles Will Defy Expectations

As Better Call Saul fans await the series' final six episodes, they've been left wondering how Saul will tie into the established events of Breaking Bad, and when Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) will appear in Season 6.

Showrunner Peter Gould has confirmed the infamous Breaking Bad duo's return, telling Entertainment Weekly, "You're going to see Walt and Jesse this season." However, he says fans don't have things figured out quite yet, adding, "The way you see them and when you see them won't necessarily be what you'd expect."

"I've heard a lot of few theories about what's going to happen," he continued. "And I'm happy to report I haven't heard a theory that comes quite close to the actual fact."

In Gould's opinion, holding off on Cranston and Paul's cameos was the right decision, because it gave Better Call Saul a chance to survive without the direct influence of Breaking Bad's lead characters.

"We waited to see [Walt and Jesse] until it was right for this story," Gould said. "Of course, the low-hanging fruit would've been to have them appear early in Season 1, to kick the show off. I think the way that they do appear is all about the story of Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler [Rhea Seehorn] and Mike Ehrmantraut [Jonathan Banks]. I hope you agree when you see it."

Aaron Paul certainly does. In an April interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paul said Gould and Vince Gilligan figured out "the perfect way" to bring Walt and Jesse back.

Before fans get too excited, Gould emphasized that the final episodes of Better Call Saul will be about the unique world they've created, and not about Breaking Bad. "It's very much about the story that we've got and it's very much in keeping with the style of this particular show and the way we present things," he said. "I'm very excited and they, of course, are fantastic."

The final six episodes of Better Call Saul premiere July 11 on AMC.
