Trailer Premiere: Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale Move Into a House of Horrors in Netflix's The Watcher

For anyone who read the 2018 article "The Watcher" in New York Magazine, the prospect of a filmed TV series based on the unsettling series of events depicted therein likely sends a chill down your spine. The true story of Derek and Maria Broaddus, who bought their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey, only to begin receiving a series of ominous and threatening notes from someone called The Watcher, is the stuff of classic American horror stories, so of course it's Ryan Murphy who's come to adapt the series into a star-studded tale of terror.

Netflix released the trailer today at its Tudum event, giving us all a first look at Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as the Broadduses. Soon after they move into the Westfield home with their three kids, their idyllic life quickly turns into a paranoid nightmare with every new note that arrives from The Watcher, who claims to be the latest in a long line of unseen stewards of the home and who makes ominous mention of needing "young blood". Suspicion turns to pretty much everybody in the Broaddus's neighborhood, which opens the door for a Ryan Murphy specialty: a sprawling cast of delicious supporting players. In this case, Richard Kind and Margo Martindale as friendly-at-first neighbors, along with Mia Farrow, Joe Mantello, Terry Kinney, Christopher McDonald, and The Undoing's Noma Dumezweni.

Recent Emmy-winner Jennifer Coolidge is also featured as the family's realtor, who ends up urging Watts's Maria to "sell, sell, sell, sell, sell, sell, sell." Coolidge was the centerpiece of an enigmatic teaser Netflix released earlier this month where her character, Karen Calhoun, hosted an open house video tour for the infamously Watched property.

The new trailer offers plenty of tense moments as the Broaddus family tries to figure out who's watching them, all to the tune of the creepiest version of the late Olivia Newton-John's "Hopelessly Devoted to You" you've ever heard.

The seven-episode series will drop October 13th on Netflix.
