A typical day of enjoyment at The Boardwalk, Hersheypark's well-known water feature, took a tragic turn when a 9-year-old child drowned after getting into trouble in the water. Lifeguards and emergency personnel on the scene reportedly responded quickly after the child showed signs of concern.
John Lawn, the CEO of Hersheypark, later addressed the tragic event, expressing his profound sadness and pledging a thorough investigation. According to him, the park is dedicated to openness and taking all necessary steps to ensure that a similar incident never occurs again. Families were also reassured by Lawn that visitor safety is still their first concern.
CEO John Lawn addressed the tragedy at The Boardwalk, and he confirmed that on the evening of July 24, 2025, a 9‑year‑old guest tragically lost their life after showing signs of distress in one of the park’s water attractions.
Lawn said that the moment lifeguards spotted the child in trouble, they sprang into action, joined by first responders and medical teams, to try and save them. The child was rushed to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, but doctors weren’t able to bring them back.
“Our hearts break for this child and their family,” Lawn added. “We send them our deepest condolences.” Out of respect for their privacy, he said no personal details about the family would be released.
Lawn said Hersheypark has already started a full internal review and will work closely with authorities to figure out exactly what went wrong and whether any changes to safety protocols are needed.
This tragedy is extremely rare in the amusement giant’s history; a company spokesperson noted the last on‑site fatality tied to an attraction occurred in 1977, involving a maintenance worker, making this the first death involving a child guest in decades.
Lawn also addressed future visitors directly:
“To every family who visits Hersheypark, please know this: your safety and well‑being drive every decision we make,” he said. “We will thoroughly investigate this tragedy and honor the memory of this youngest guest by continuing our focus on ensuring the safety of our guests at Hersheypark”.
Even though Hersheypark hasn’t said which ride was involved, we do know The Boardwalk is home to 16 water attractions, from speedy slides to a lazy river and a massive, 378,000‑gallon wave pool called “The Shore.” All lifeguards here go through thorough training, earning their certification and then keeping skills sharp with monthly drills, practices Hershey Entertainment touts as key to keeping guests safe.
Lawn wrapped up his statement with a heavy heart but firm resolve. Hersheypark may be reeling, but it isn’t backing away from its safety pledge. The park is offering counseling to staff and visitors, and plans to comb through every detail of its water‑park operations.
