Wegmans recalls its Semi-Sweet chocolate Nonpareils

Wegmans Food Markets has decided to pull its Semi-Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils from shelves because they contain milk, which was not mentioned on the label. This move comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pointed out that milk was present in the product but not listed as an ingredient. Mellace Family Brands California, Inc., a company in Warren, Ohio, made these chocolate candies.

The problem happened because of a short-term glitch in how the supplier makes the product, which led to milk ending up in the mix by accident. The inclusion of milk in a product labeled "semi-sweet" without mentioning milk creates a danger for people allergic or sensitive to milk. The FDA warns that such individuals might face severe or fatal reactions if they consume the product:

"The recall was initiated after it was discovered that Wegmans Semi-Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils contained a milk allergen and was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk," according to the FDA notice. "(A) subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the suppliers’ manufacturing process. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product."

Although no harmful health effects have been reported as of July 3, authorities are asking affected customers to take the recall.
