With slightly fewer drama pilots ordered this year overall (35 vs 41 in 2018, the same as 2014), Los Angeles is the city that suffers most from the decrease, with only 5 pilots being produced within its borders (down from 8 in 2018). As always, L.A. still wins with all of the comedy pilots shot there, both singlecam & multicam (25 overall), as well as many off-cycle cable and streaming series. In fact, L.A. is poised to hit an all-time record in 2019, thanks to the streaming platform production boom.
Vancouver is setting its own all-time record, scoring 10 pilots (up from 6 in 2018). The Canadian city is already home to several CW series and many more across the dial (including The Good Doctor and A Million Little Things). It’s a good year for New York too, with 9 pilots (down from 11 in 2018), while Atlanta is gaining momentum after a difficult last year. They have 4 (up from 2 in 2018). Chicago is the biggest loser, with no pilots ordered this year (down from 4 in 2018), while more far-flung locations are almost nowhere to be found, with the exception of New Zealand for ABC’s Triangle.
Several pilots do plan to shoot limited exterior scenes in their scripted home cities, including Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlistin San Francisco, Batwoman, Chicago, The Baker and the Beauty in Miami and Stumptown in Portland.
