Shonda Rhimes' Netflix debut series Bridgerton looks to be setting up a race against scandal.
The mysterious Lady Whistledown runs a gossip sheet that sniffs out the sordid details of the private lives of London high society of the early 1800s. With such a tattle-tale in their midst, one wonders what would possess Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) to involve herself with the dashing Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) and his plan for them to feign romantic interest in one another in order to discourage unwanted advances from "presumptuous mothers" and to renew interest from potential suitors intrigued by her attachment.
It seems like a plan destined to "tempt scandal." Yet it's quite possible that the romantic interest is not entirely feigned.
Bridgerton premieres December 25 on Netflix.
