Sometimes, it's a scheduling issue that does you in. While Amber Ruffin has had quite a successful tenure at NBC, she still looks back at her Saturday Night Live audition with regret, as she had the unfortunate luck of auditioning immediately after Leslie Jones. Ruffin discussed the disappointing experience Thursday on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where she explained that Jones lit up the room so much that "everyone who was there in the audience" was still laughing, even after she'd walked "50 yards away from the stage."
"This is just other comedians. It's not like, a real audience! It's like 20 people," said Ruffin. "They had lost their minds."
After Jones' lights-out performance, Ruffin delivered a "fine" audition, but it simply wasn't enough to shift the focus away from her predecessor.
Of course, things turned out okay for Ruffin: she ultimately landed a gig as a writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers, and recently launched a weekly talk show, The Amber Ruffin Show, that's shaking up the late-night landscape.
Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday-Thursday at 11:00 PM ET on Bravo.
