In Thursday's series premiere of Mr. Mayor, Jayden Kwapis (Bobby Moynihan) explains a number of things to Mayor Bremer (Ted Danson), including the reason he has prescription flip-flops ("podiatric claustrophobia") and origin of his name.
Bremer makes the astute observation that he is a little too old to be named Jayden, and for some reason Jayden is impressed by that and has a whole spiel prepared about it. "Thank you for noticing! I'm actually one of the oldest Jaydens you'll ever meet. Born in 1981, I like to think I'm the original Jayden. It's sort of a combination. I'm named after my father Jamie and his best friend Dennis."
Something about how Moynihan hits the word "Dennis" makes the whole bit work.
Mr. Mayor airs Thursdays at 8:00 PM ET on NBC.
