For the ditzy friend on a traditional multi-camera sitcom, Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) has an alarmingly dark backstory. When you pull it all out of the jokey context and line it up like this, you wonder if the idea in the writers' room was that if you pile on enough tragedy, it becomes comedy?

Thankfully, the ever-bubbly Phoebe never really seemed to let it all get her down.

Friends ran from 1994 to 2004 airs on NBC and is currently streaming on HBO Max.
